NEO_ARTEFACTS is an experimental initiative by Fazleen Karlan that looks into the intersection between art and archaeology.
Drawing from her past experience as a post-excavation technician, NEO_ARTEFACTS seeks to reassemble fragments of material from different timeframes, constructing personal and cultural realities. Growing up as a millennial, the works conflate a variety of influences including the rise of the Internet and its material culture. NEO_ARTEFACTS has presented in several group exhibitions in Singapore and was an Artist-in-Residence with NTU Centre for Contemporary Art between April - August 2022.

Expanding on the idea of excavation and artefacts, this work highlights the characteristics of society through the gradual accumulation and decay of objects they used. If another species lands on earth millions of years from today, what will it find? It will excavate various unidentifiable objects without knowing its functions. A Sheng Siong plastic bag will exist for another century while we only have 70 years to live. Everyday objects such as these become a tangible echo of our existence, recasting them into artefacts.
Further exploring the archaeology of the present, construction activity is an indicator of changes in the physical landscape. Continuous building of sites, in tandem with demolition works, become layers that build up the attributes of a place.
The negotiation between creation and demolition results in an archive for urban fragments through collecting: rocks, concrete pieces, broken pavement, discarded tiles.
Archaeological information that is accessible to the public is typically placed in formalized settings, thus d3ar succ3ssor hopes to expand on these existing information structures.
